Whakamaarama - Translation

I sit on the face our land and look up to the sky, and there is Matariki shining oh so brightly.
Let's all welcome Matariki.
*Matariki Tapuaua is a proverbial saying = it's going to be a wet season judging by the clearness of Matariki (quite hazy)
*Matariki ahunga nui is also a proverbial saying = Matariki has risen let's get our Kumara pits ready (Could be referring to preparation in general though)
Waiti etc are the names of the children or sisters of Matariki (There are different versions and beliefs. Uru rangi is the brightest star according to the words of this waiata)
He koanga ngakau ka kitea koe = our hearts are full of joy to see you Matariki.
Roiroi aku kamo.. I shed tears..... in acknowledgement and tribute to all our ancestors that have passed away
Kua riro ki te po = taken into the night/moved on
