Whānau Group
The Northland School Whānau Group was established in 2004 by a group of parents and staff committed to support the school in meeting specific learning needs for Māori students. By putting the Treaty of Waitangi at the forefront of our work, we have found that we are able to foster all students to learn and grow with a strong cultural identity, not just Māori students.
The Whānau Group is made up of parents, teachers and kaumatua who provide consultation and education for Northland School to uphold, enhance and support Te Ao Māori.
The Whānau group is open to all families within our school community. If you would like to learn more about our kaupapa (purpose) and our role, please come along. We meet each term.
The Whānau Group supports the bicultural focus of the school and helps the school to uphold its commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi and the Ministry of Education’s Ka Hikitia Strategy.
The Group provides consultation opportunities to the school to ensure that our tamariki (children) have genuine, culturally appropriate experiences.
Tamariki participate in these experiences through:
- Kapa haka
- Learning Te Reo Māori
- Matariki (Māori New Year) Celebrations
- Pōwhiri (Welcome ceremonies)
- Te Wiki o te Reo Māori (Māori language week)
- Provides a support network for whānau within our school community.
You are invited!
We meet each term, usually on the third Monday of each term.
Please check the school newsletter for meeting dates.
