Road safety is an important aspect of a child’s education and is a shared responsibility between the school and the parents. As well as ensuring the safe travel of children between home and school, an awareness of road safety is a vital part of each person’s well-being.
A Road Safety awareness programme is integrated as part of the classroom programme. This includes safe road crossing procedures, safe riding to and from school, the use of pedestrian crossings and safe walkways.
At Northland we provide the following support for students crossing roads near the school: Road Patrols with signs on Northland Road, Road Patrol Wardens on Harbourview Road and Road Patrol Flags on the corner of Kaihuia Street and Northland Road intersection.
Students from Year 6-8 are trained each year to carry out the important duties on the crossings outside the school. The training is provided by the Police and all equipment is provided by the Wellington City Council who support the programme in schools.
Teachers and parents are rostered on to help the students with their responsibilities between 8:30-8:55am and 2:50-3:15pm each day. Students are rostered on either before or after school for a week each term.
